They say to visualize your race in the days leading up to it. Thankfully someone’s gone ahead and taped the whole thing. You can find me watching this on repeat all day tomorrow.

DJ My Marathon!!

Welcome to my super-awesome fundraising idea for this year: DJ My Marathon!

I’m back at it again training for a marathon (THE NYC MARATHON!), and raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) as a participant in their Team In Training program, as well as for Camp Interactive as a team member of Team Interactive, and I’m asking you to help by making a donation to my fundraising campaign.

In addition to asking for a donation, I’m also asking for your support in the form of song.

While I’m selling miles again this year (donate $30 and pick a mile - I’ll be sending out tweets during the marathon), I’m also asking you to DJ My Marathon!

For a donation of $30 you can also request/dedicate a song that will go on my marathon playlist that I’ll be listening to as I run through the 5 boroughs of New York City on November 6, 2011, just 65 days away! I’ll also be tweeting the songs and dedications the day of the marathon, as well as publishing the final marathon playlist on Spotify for people all over the world to enjoy too!

If I hit my goal of 11 minutes per mile, it will approximately take me 288 minutes to reach the finish line. That means I need about 82 songs to make it there! That’s a lot of music!

So please make a donation, request or dedicate a song, and help me reach the finish line!

Please use one of the links below to donate online quickly and securely plus learn more about my progress along the way.  You’ll receive a confirmation of your donation by email and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation.

You can either leave a comment with the mile number and song title, or simply email it to me - michelle.deforest[at]gmail.com

OR

Each donation to the LLS helps accelerate finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Nearly 958,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers.  I am hoping that my participation in Team In Training will help bring them hope and support.

Each donation to Camp Interactive help further their mission to empower inner-city youth through the inspiration of the outdoors and the creative power of technology. When urban teenagers step back into nature and forward into technology they gain invaluable skills, heighten their academic standing, and begin to realize more of life’s possibilities.

On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Camp Interactive, thank you very much for your support, and I greatly appreciate your generosity!

TL;DR

For better or worse I’m asking the general public to DJ my first NYC marathon.

  • Make a donation of $30 to one of the charities
  • Send me your request/dedication
  • Uplift my spirits or totally screw with me during a very long 26.2 mile run
  • I’ll post the final playlist to Spotify.

Thanks!

What’s better?

Friends, I need your opinion. This is both a brainstorm, and (ahem) a shameless plug for my fundraising efforts for the NYC Marathon for both CampInteractive and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Options for fundraisers: what’s more FUN?

1. Me bar-tending for charity tips (I LOL at the thought of this, but could be very fun)

2. Tickets to a Meatball Wednesday (would be at least $40-$50 a ticket - includes my famous meatballs and beer/wine)

3. Selling something I make (I have no idea what this could be, but I have a square and really want to use it).

Anyone have ideas? Or what sounds more appealing???

P.S. donate here or here or here :)

RE: the P.S. from my last post (part 1)

As a way to raise money for Camp Interactive, I’m offering two fantastic deals for you.

One is that I’m selling MILES. That’s right, you have an option of purchasing a mile. At each mile during the marathon I’ll tweet out to you! Get em while they’re hot! Donation cost: $50/mile

I will run the full 26.2 miles though five boroughs with your twitter or company name in gigantic sharpie letters for a donation of $350

BIRTHDAY WISH! Plz pay attenshun:

I have a birthday wish: It is for you to lend your support and latte/app store dollars as I train for the New York City marathon. I’m scared out of my mind (the “oh shit” moment at the starting line never seems to ease up), but I can do this. I can do this especially because I relied on after school care when I was younger, and that is what Camp Interactive is working on starting.

Right now Camp Interactive offers weekend and summer trips to inner city youth in the Bronx and East Harlem and it gets kids outside (healthy for all), engaged in activities (bye bye obesity), and (wait for it…) CODING! (I don’t even know how to code!)

Many schools have had to cut back on athletic programs, and a lot of parents rely on after school care, so if you help me help the kids, Camp Interactive will get to launch TEAM ACTIVE, which will be an after school RUNNING program, and the kids then learn how to run AND code, and then they build websites and blog about their running experiences, which will in turn get MORE KIDS doing the same! EVERY ONE WINS!

So, please make my (birth) day (technically next Monday), and support my efforts to support Camp Interactive.

Donations can be made here.

*reblogs are also a fine form of donation/support :)

P.S. I’m also doing that fun thing where I sell miles and my body for your personal/company placement. AND I’m looking for corporate sponsors. More on that coming soon.

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT!!

HEEEE!! I’m giddy to announce this!

Two and a half years ago when I signed up for a marathon with Team In Training it CHANGED MY LIFE. A large part of my experience was blogged here and to this day I still have people telling me I inspired them to get out and run (and bike and swim!). So, I’m doubly excited to announce that I’m running the NYC MARATHON for CAMP INTERACTIVE!!

Why doubly??

Well, for one reason I’M RUNNING ANOTHER MARATHON!
My last one didn’t go that well. I did it. I finished. But I was injured physically and mentally after it. That’s not to say it wasn’t the most rewarding experience of my life. I’d do it a thousand times over. (But maybe I’d be smarter about cross training :) So early this summer I participated in a running clinic (thanks Emily!), and after that I was inspired to push through my fears and sign up for a half marathon (which I’m running in early October). THEN, Toby approached me about running the NYC Marathon with Camp Interactive, and this is why I’m DOUBLY excited!

Camp Interactive does two really important things for children - introduces them to technology and outdoor activities. And with this team effort, we’re trying to raise enough money for Camp Interactive to kick off TEAM ACTIVE, which will serve as a running program for kids who don’t have much in the way of athletic programs at their schools. That means being able to inspire even more people to RUN!!

A bit about Team Active:

Team Active will be so much more than just a place where kids run once or twice a week. Due to the economic hardships that are present today, many kids are not offered good in-school or after-school athletic opportunities, Team Active will give these kids the support they need. Running is a great catalyst for building new friendships, running with a group of others is a bonding experience, everyone is running together and having fun doing it! Team Active hopefully will be a step in inspiring living a healthy lifestyle, a love for running, and an integration of technology in the lives of many New York City Kids.

I mean, reading that was all I needed to know that I’d have to push through my fears (of running and fundraising) and make this happen. I know I’ve been begging you guys for money for about 2 years now, but I just can’t pass up this opportunity to make such a difference.

I hope you’ll join me in creating an opportunity for these kids to discover what many of us have already discovered - running and technology can change your life.
