“Wait, what? I don’t get this whole Drew Carey thing”
drew:
Totally understandable. It’s been a busy past few days so I figured that a recap would be in order.
After my 9th chemo treatment, I got some awesome news. The masses in my neck, chest, and abdomen had been labeled by my Dr. as “resolved” after a PET scan. That meant I’m going in the right direction. I currently have 2 more chemo treatments left.
My last treatment is Nov. 2nd. A week before my birthday, Nov. 9th. So I decided to put my Twitter name (@Drew) up for auction hoping to raise some money to give to LIVESTRONG for my birthday. This is the foundation that has been by my side since my diagnosis.
I talked to Twitter before this. Their terms of service strictly prohibit selling a twitter name for personal financial gain. They understood what I was trying to do and blessed it.
So we went forward and Drew Carey (@DrewFromTV) got wind of the auction. The starting bid was $10,000. A huge amount in my mind. He took it further with a starting bid of $25,000. And then minutes later threw in a curveball. If he got 100,000 followers by auction end (Nov 9th), his bid would turn into $100,000.
Wow.
And then the bombshell yesterday. If he gets 1,000,000 (one million) followers by the end of THIS YEAR, December 31st, he will donate $1,000,000 (one million dollars) to LIVESTRONG. (watch the video with Shira Lazar here!)
Leah Clark totally got what Drew Carey is trying to do.
He is raising awareness, he is taking an opportunity to give to a wonderful organization and help obliterate a horrific disease…cancer.
More to come, there’s a whole month left for bidding and a whole few months left before the end of the year. Will another Drew bid? Drew Barrymore, Drew Brees? If they do, what does that mean? It means more awareness will be raised for a disease that is assumed to be “under control” or “something that won’t affect me”.
Since his bid, he went from 13k followers to over 60k at this point. He gets it and so do you. You are participating in raising priceless awareness AND a VERY significant dollar amount that goes right to Cancer research.
That’s what this whole thing is all about.
Thank you.

GPOYW: About to finish my first triathlon edition.
33 hrs to go. I’ve done all that I can do.
- Trained 18 weeks.
- Planned every bit of food and liquid from today until the finish line.
- Thought through the transitions.
- Bathed my bike.
- Packed an insane amount of stuff.
- Dropped off my bike for transport.
- Gathered last minute items (new sunglasses and a flashlight).
- Mentally ran through my race.
- Tapered.
- Went for a (great) 20 minute run with intervals.
- Stretched.
And now it’s time for the second night of quality rest since tomorrow night will be no good. I’ll barely be in bed before 10 and I’ll have to wake up at 3:45am.
Oh, and if you were thinking of coming out, here’s a map. The main event will be near Playland Park (roller coaster rides after?), and above is the run map.
I’m hoping to get just under 4 hrs (3:59 sounds so much better than 4:01), but the forecast calls for rain so we’ll see how fast the bike goes.
I’m in the 8th swim wave starting at 7:27 with a hot pink swim cap, and I expect the day to go something like:
7:30 - swim
8:15 - T1
8:20 - Bike
10:20 - T2
10:25 - Run
11:30 - Finish
Ideally the transitions won’t take 5 minutes, and the bike will go faster, and I’ll feel phenomenal and run 9 minute miles after all of that, but who knows.
The only thing I do know is that after 18 weeks I think I’m ready.
See you guys at the finish line and I’ll holler about the SUNDAY FUNDAY post-race celebration.
#1089 MDF
Swim waves have been posted!
1089 WAVE 8 DeForest Michelle W 25-29
Eek! As far as I can tell there are a total of 10 waves. So I’m not totally at the back, but still a little concerned about the bike cut off. They go by the start of the race, rather than after the last wave starts.
As a side note looks like my race number is 1089!
17 Weeks of Training Completed, 6 Days Until the Triathlon
There’s so much to do!
I need to get some rest (absolutely no going out for me), spend some time visualizing the race (as suggested by my coach), PACK (you would think I’m leaving for a week!), eat safely (no corn, caffeine, spicy, acidic, fibrous anything, carb everything) & cut down on my calories (proving to be impossible), tune up my bike, and continue my active taper. Whew! It’s Monday and I’m already tired.
Here’s what the taper looks like:
Today (Monday): Swim 30 minutes
Tuesday: Bike 45 minutes & stretch - and pick up my race packet!
Wednesday: Run 30 minutes
Thursday: REST
Friday: Run 30 minutes, deliver my bike for transport, go to sleep by 9pm somehow, someway.
Saturday: TRAVEL TO WESTCHESTER *cue nerves* Hydrate, travel, check into the hotel, unload bike, transition clinic, PRACTICE SWIM(!!), TNT Inspiration Dinner (reminding us why we’re really doing this (GO DREW!), meeting with coaches, attempt to sleep.
SUNDAY: Wake up crazy early - OMGLETSGETITON @ 4am, leave the hotel @ 5am, prep the transition area, hold it together, ROCK THE F**K OUT @ 7am, travel back, CELEBRATE (TBD).
Monday: Begin my first vacation in 5+ years.
I’m excited and nervous, and ready for the release.
**Now, I know I’ve hit my fundraising goal, but I’d like to issue one last call for donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Any amount would be greatly appreciated! http://pages.teamintraining.org/nyc/wchtri09/mdeforest
Lucky #9? You betcha.
drew:
So I went into chemo #9 today not knowing if my PET scan results were even in. I had the test on Friday morning. (the scan to the right is NOT me)
Not sure if I ever shared this story publicly, but my oncologist, Dr. Andrew Solan was chosen at random.
My family Dr. suggested an oncologist in his building.
They didn’t take my insurance.
So I called my insurance (the same ones that would later mark me down as “expired”, not as in insurance is expired…expired as in deceased), and they gave me a list of local oncologists who took my insurance.
“Dr. Andrew….” the lady started.
“What’s his #, I’ll call that one” I said.
His name is Andrew. So is mine.
That is how I picked my oncologist. And boy was I lucky. He is an amazingly warm man, and has 31 years of experience. His office staff is wonderful in every way. I am planning on something big for them as a thank you. Ellen, who administers my chemo is a champ, and handles all of my fellow chemo’zers alone most of the time. She doesn’t take any crap, and dishes it out to keep everyone on their toes and in good spirits. I love her.
Today I went in, I paid my office visit fee, and snuck a peek inside of my chart. I thought i saw the phrase “PET scan” on the top, but there were no pictures…just a bunch of words. Was that it?
I got my blood drawn and went to wait for Dr. Solan.
“Your PET scan looks good” he said.
“Cool” I replied. Yeah, real nice. Inside I was thinking “WHAT THE HELL DOES GOOD MEAN???”
He then read the scan over a few more times since he had just gotten the results this morning.
“This is very VERY good in fact”.
“Sweet” I said. Inside I was thinking “WHAT THE HELL DOES VERY VERY GOOD MEAN”
“The mass in your neck is resolved. The mass in your chest is resolved. The mass in your abdomen is resolved.”
Resolved? Gone. Off the map. Peace out boyscout.
HolyMotherOfAwesome.
He stood there beaming. He’s a very pleasant guy, but he was honestly smiling. He had told me he read the Philly Inquirer piece, and heard all about BlameDrewsCancer. He was proud. The office is proud. They put up some clippings and a Blame-A-Thon poster up on the wall. My “wall of fame” they call it. They’re so super sweet.
My mom has made pillows for my fellow chemo’zers, I brought in some swedish fish via Louis Gray. Brought in some LIVESTRONG bracelets, pins, and info. Tried my best to bring a positive vibe to some crappy situations.
It works.
Blaming works. Please keep it coming.
Your support works. Please keep it coming.
I have 3 more chemo treatments left, and “You’re done”, Dr. Solan….I mean Andrew said.
“That’s outstanding” I replied. But inside I was thinking…”I’m only getting started”
(Side note: This was the first chemo treatment I went to entirely alone. I don’t like going alone. I get scared. Blame Cancer will be working on a “Chemo Co-Pilot” program as first order)
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! I’m SOSOSOSOSOSO happy for you Drew!
