Alternative Medicine
So, I’ve been blogging a bit here and there about GERD and how it’s getting in the way of my running everything. I’ve been taking PPI (proton pump inhibitors) regularly for over a year now, and most recently 3 times a day, with still not much relief. After doing a bit of digging, I’ve discovered how bad they are to take long term.
Side effects include restriction of B12, calcium, and protein absorption, lowered immune function in the stomach (hello food poisoning), and increase in the hormone gastrin, which tells your stomach to produce even more stomach acid.
I’m tired, full of Zegerid, Zantac, Tums Ultra, and PeptoBismal, and it’s getting in the way of my marathon training. So, on to the alternative medicines.
Things I’m going to try:
-Acupuncture
-Chiropractor
-Mastic Gum
-Active Manuka Honey
-Betaine HCI
-Aloe vera juice (30 min before every meal)
-A nutritionist specializing in GERD
And then I’m seeing my new doc over at One Medical to see what else they suggest.
If anyone has any other suggestions, bring ‘em on.
